What Makes This Farm Different?
The 19th century farmstead, while in the process of restoration, is a working 21st farm. It was originally homesteaded in 1835 by the Charles family, who established a cattle-farming empire that specialized in breeding special European stock. The centerpiece of the farm is the gambrel roofed bank barn built around 1865. It has become well-known nation-wide; featured in the National Smithsonian Traveling Barn Exhibit, as the first model in the "Barn Again!" Ertl Collectibles series, on the cover of Successful Farming magazine, in the recently published book, The American Barn, and in John Deere's 1998 calendar. |

The Farm Comes Alive At The Scenic Drive |

The Walnut Grove Farm hosts special events throughout the year (including a stop on the Scenic Drive!). For the first two full weekends in October, the farm is bursting with excitement, flooding the five senses with the atmosphere of a farm in the autumn. As the only juried stop on the drive, the "Barn Pals"(as the visiting artisans are affectionately referred to) exhibit fine arts and original crafts from the past, offering their handcrafted wares for sale. |
A day at the farm is truly a blast from the past. In addition to the arts and crafts on display, numerous demonstrations are going on each day. Watch dried herbal designing, broom making, quilting, weaving, spinning, wood carving, basket making, timber framing, and ciderpressing and gain a true appreciation for modern conveniences while admiring the beauty of these arts. Old time folk music may inspire your feet to dancing, or, if you're not light on your feet, hop aboard a horse drawn wagon and go for a tour of the Farm and prairie (always popular with kids of all ages). |

| Live musical entertainment this year includes Any Olde Tyme String Band both Sundays from 1 to 3 p.m. and Almost Live on October 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. |

| This stop specializes in dried flower decorations and arrangements, perfect for any home. Or, since Halloween is coming up, there are pumpkins aplenty to be taken home for carving, or just to decorate your home. |
